Shimmick Construction

Shimmick Construction Company, Inc. (SCCI) was founded in 1990 by John Shimmick and his long time friend and colleague Mike Strandberg.  Through the 1990’s SCCI became one of the most active contractors engaged in the seismic retrofit of highways and bridges in Southern California.  During the same decade SCCI constructed a series of utility and sewer projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 1992, SCCI partnered with Obayashi Corporation to create a joint venture that began with the building of a $46 million cut-and-cover box culvert for the City of San Francisco. This project was very successful and was the catalyst that brought Shimmick into the business of building big complex projects and Joint Venturing with National and International Contractors.

Shimmick History

In the following decade SCCI went on to build a number of large railroad and highway projects in the Los Angeles area.  During this time SCCI also constructed a variety of underground utility projects and bridges in and around the San Francisco bay area.  Concurrently, SCCI extended its project capabilities to water resources projects, including dams, water and wastewater treatment plants; and expanded its geographical range throughout California.

In 2003, SCCI entered the Design-Build project delivery arena with the $175 million San Fernando Valley Bus Rapid Transit Project.  Having partnered with several of the premier engineering and design firms in the world, SCCI continues to engage in high profile Design-Build work as well as CMGC contracts.

By the late 2000’s SCCI was engaging in ever more complex and high-value projects including the $155 million Golden Gate Bridge Seismic Retrofit Project and the $206 million Skinner Water Treatment Plant and the $188 million Diemer Water Treatment Plant both for the Metropolitan Water District in Southern California.  Along the way, SCCI became a licensed Electrical Contractor, self-performing the electrical scope on its own projects, subcontracting on others, as well as performing stand-alone electrical projects as the GC.

During this last decade SCCI has begun building (and in all but one   project, as the lead JV partner) mega projects including the current $800 million Gerald Desmond Bridge cable stay bridge for the Port of Long Beach and the $900 million BART extension to San Jose. Recently SCCI expanded their geographic capabilities into Washington State with constructing water, electrical and large light rail projects in and around the city of Seattle. Shimmick is now opening an office in Hawaii as well with the recent procurement of another mega project to design and build an $875 million light rail project in Honolulu.

In the last few years, SCCI has also started a foundation group that is performing foundation work of all types throughout the western United States, Colorado and Hawaii. This work includes some of the most technical and challenging large diameter drilled shaft foundation projects in the US.
