The Illinois Street Intermodal Bridge accross Islais Creek is the City of San Francisco's 4th movable bridge and 2nd across this navigable waterway. The Port of San Francisco conceived the project to restore freight rail service to pier 80 and relieve vehicle congestion along 3rd Street. the 10 span bridge in 462 feet long with a single freight track, 2 vehicular traffic lanes and dedicated bicycle and pedestrian walkways. The movable span is a single leaf non-counterweighted trunnion bascule raised by two hydraulic cylinders (20 in. bore x 300in strike). The cylinders provide 600 tons of pulling force to raise the leaf 84 degrees and create a 64ft. clear navigable waterway.
