Owner: Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District
Contract value: $142,000,000
The Golden Gate Bridge is a national landmark. It was originally built in 1937, and is internationally renowned as one of the greatest suspension span structures ever built. The Bridge is also a critical public structure, as it provides a vital role in the public transportation infrastructure of both the United States and the State of California. The Bridge itself carries over 40 million vehicles per year.
This project has 3 primary elements of work:
- Installation of a Physical Suicide Deterrent System on the east and west sides, for approximately the full length of the Golden Gate Bridge.
- Installation of the Wind Retrofit on the west side of the main span of the Suspension bridge.
- Installation of the Traveler Access System and Fixed Charging Station Platforms on the Suspension Bridge.
This is Shimmick Construction’s third project awarded by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. Completion of this project requires state-of-the-art structural steel fabrication and construction technology. Safety is the highest priority as the work is conducted in a harsh marine and coastal environment over the water of the Golden Gate Strait and under a canopy which accommodates millions of tourists, pedestrians and bicyclists each year.
