Description

As part of the BART Earthquake Safety Program this project will upgrade the 34.5 KV cabling system on BART's routes through Oakland and Berkeley, CA. Three phases of 250 MCM cable is installed between substations at the MacArthur, Ashby and Rockridge BART stations in a combination of raceways including pre-cast trench, splice-cable trays, 9,000 ft of 6 in rigid galvanized conduit, 3,000 ft of 6 in phenolic conduit and 5,000 ft of concrete encased duct bank.

The new cable will provide a new circuit between the existing substations connected through new AC switchgear sectionalizing stations to interconnect the three substations and provide redundancy to the AC power supply. The new circuit will allow the BART trains to run even if an earthquake should cause one of the existing substations to lose power.

During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, BART recorded an average weekday ridership of 366,565, the highest in its history, making BART the fifth busiest heavy rail rapid transit system in the US. BART's one-day ridership record was set on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, with over 568,061 passengers attending the San Francisco Giants' victory parade for their World Series championship.
