Owner: San Fransisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART)
Contract value: $4,554,900.00
The purpose of this project was to remove the traction power conduit and cable in order to install a new conduit and cable for BART’s traction power system. The existing conduit and cable were demolished and replaced along 2 miles of BART track in a combination of locations such as tunnels, aerial structures, and underground duct bank. The existing conduit consisted of a 4” steel pipe that was removed and replaced with a 6” galvanized rigid steel conduit. Once the new conduit was installed a BART custom 34.5 kV cable was installed in the new raceway. All material was removed and installed using a combination of equipment such as hi-rail vehicles, scissor lifts, and boom lifts. The linear nature of this project required our work area to shut down active freeways, BART train tracks, UPPR train tracks, city streets, and large intersections. This took a great deal of coordination and traffic control in order to complete necessary work tasks. In addition to this work an underground concrete vault was installed. This required shoring, excavation, concrete boom pumping, rebar install, formwork, and concrete placement. This project was successful for SCCI, and we look forward to the next opportunity to complete a project with similar complexity and challenges.
