The project included the construction of a new facility for Caltrain's locomotives and passenger cars. The facility was constructed on the site of a former Southern Pacific rail yard in San Jose, CA, and it accommodates critical activities including daily inspections, scheduled maintenance, running repairs, train washing, and storage.
Construction included a 3-level 125 ft by 400 ft structural steel frame repair shop and office building, which is founded on 190 30-ft deep auger cast piles. A permanent train washer was installed to replace the previous portable machine, and waste water from the washer is processed through a new, dissolved air flocculation treatment plant prior to disposal into city sanitary sewers. New storage tracks with 480 volt electrical ground power were constructed to power electric trains in preparation for service. An additional 1,000 linear ft of service track pits were installed to expedite equipment service.
