Owner: City and County of San Francisco
Contract value: $3,311,366
This project included the removal and replacement of worn out MUNI L-Line track in the city of San Francisco. The existing tie and ballast track was replaced with a direct fixation system. This method has multiple advantages - the most important being longer lasting product and easier future maintenance. Additional work included rail lubrication systems, street lights and traffic signals, trolley poles and foundations, replacement of existing Overhead Contact System (OCS), relocation of existing sewer and water lines, reconstruction of curb ramps, installation of new MUNI boarding areas, and repaving of trackway and street.
This project involved a number of challenges such as limited access, limited work windows, night and weekend work, work around live traffic and trains, multiple job sites located on some of the busiest streets of San Francisco. Shimmick formed strong, positive relationships with the Owner, SFMTA, MUNI Railway, the Department of Parking and Traffic, the Department of Public Works and the SF Water Department. These relationships were key to the successful, on time completion of the project.
