The flood protection project required diversion of the existing creek flow. This was accomplished throughout the entire length of the project by damming the creek at I-680 and pumping the water with a 10-in high volume pump through fusion welded 24-in HDPE pipe.
After dewatering and de-fishing the creek, the creek was broadened by excavating 63,000 cubic yards of material. This created an earth channel with gabion and concrete lined protection in addition to 2,400 lineal ft of masonry block floodwalls. New concrete structures were build at the San Antonio Street and I-680 culverts, including a retaining wall and five warped transition wing walls. Work also included a new 160 ft long steel pedestrian bridge at Kammerer Avenue.
