This project involved installation of Light Rail Segment E and was one of six light rail projects extending the San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency (Muni) Light Rail system from downtown to Visitation Valley. Segment E includes light rail tracks from Donner Avenue across Highway 101 to Hester Avenue along Third Street, a distance of about one mile. The project was managed as two distinct projects—the Muni work and the Caltrans work.
The Muni work consisted of relocating existing utilities, installing the light rail tracks, constructing three station platforms, installing an overhead centenary system for traction power, and performing general site work along Third Street. The Caltrans portion consisted of widening the existing Third Street/Bayshore Bridge, building a new off ramp for Northbound 101, and reconstructing the Hester Ave and Meade Ave intersections.
