25 May Shimmick Reaches Monolithic Milestone on Chickamauga Lock Project
This week, a significant achievement was reached in the construction of the new Chickamauga Lock project with a topping-off ceremony to commemorate the completion of the initial concrete monolith. Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District and Shimmick celebrated the milestone and emphasized their collaborative efforts as the lock chamber construction progresses.
The L13 Monolith is the first of 36 monoliths to be completed to its final elevation for this project and is the culmination of over two years of hard work by the Shimmick team.
Shimmick CEO and President Steve Richards initiated the ceremony, and Shimmick Crane Operator Patrick Harrison lifted the final concrete form from monolith L13. The 87-foot monolith required over 4,000 cubic yards of concrete, equivalent to the amount needed for the foundations of approximately 150 homes.
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Sahl, the commander of the Nashville District, expressed gratitude and congratulations to the USACE construction team and the Shimmick for their remarkable accomplishment. He commended their dedication to overcoming challenges while maintaining a high standard of safety and quality. Read more.
