Shimmick Wraps Up Construction Safety Week Celebration

Construction Safety Week (May 1 -5) was a great success at Shimmick! Each project and office site had a safety coordinator who made sure local safety week celebrations were fun, educational, and highlighted the importance of keeping safety top of mind. Several events included vendor demonstrations, fire extinguisher safety, and visits from the local fire and police departments.

Our Renton Good to Go! team hosted the Renton Fire Department for 2 hours to give their Hazard House demonstration. In the Hazard House, there were multiple scenarios that Sara (the Fire Marshal) went through, including:

  • Electrical fires
  • Carbon Monoxide created multiple ways
  • Falling asleep while smoking
  • Kids playing with fire/candles
  • Lint fires from the dryer
  • Unwelcome guests (animals) moving into the chimney

The Hazard House created fake smoke that traveled through the house while Sara explained what employees should do once they smell smoke or see a fire moving through each room. She also made sure to emphasize the importance of checking fire and carbon monoxide alarms, turning off all appliances, safely securing all cords, cleaning out lint from dryer machines, and getting the fireplace/chimney cleaned. The Good to Go! staff really enjoyed her demonstrations and participated a lot by asking questions and sharing their own stories.
