As of January 2021, Legacy Foundations has secured additional foundations work on the Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) Automated People Mover (APM) project, nearly doubling the contract value since it began in 2019. Legacy is responsible for installing the drilled shaft foundations for the elevated guideway, home to the future APM train. This automated train system will enable travelers to access LAX from the Metro station, Intermodal Transportation Facilities, and a Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility outside of the airport, minimizing traffic, easing congestion, and significantly cutting overall travel time for fliers.

The people mover spans 2.25 miles, crossing busy roadways such as Sepulveda and Century boulevards, and includes the drilling of 266 large diameter shafts and over 150 small diameter shafts at depths from 60 to 100 feet.

With more than 400 cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) shafts on the project, Legacy Foundations has drilled over 26,000 linear feet, installed around 12 million pounds of reinforced steel, and placed over 36,000 cubic yards of concrete. The team also installed over 4,300 linear feet of permanent shoring in large-diameter drilled shafts utilizing leave-behind casing and slip-in casing.

The CIDH work is slated for an early 2021 completion.
