The Caltrans CMGC LA-405 at San Gabriel River Bridge Scour Mitigation project in Long Beach, CA is a collaborative effort between Shimmick’s Southwest and Legacy divisions as part of a 50/50 Joint Venture with Myers & Sons. The construction contract will be negotiated and is anticipated to be awarded in September of 2022.
The team will construct pier footing extensions for Pier 3 and Pier 4 in the San Gabriel River on three bridges on Route 405: I-405 Mainline Bridge, SB I-605 to NB I-405 Connector Bridge, and SB I-405 to NB I-605 Connector Bridge. The project will involve the placement of additional cast-in-drilled hole piles under the new footing extensions on each pier, excavation of the channel bottom 17 feet around the pier footings, and backfilling using rock slope protection material. The scope also includes construction of temporary cofferdams systems, temporary construction easements, and a bike trail detour route.
Shimmick did a remarkable job of coming into the emergency situation and analyzing the needs of CDOT…. Everyone was extremely professional and went over and above to address the flooding issues at multiple locations in Northeastern Colorado.
