08 Sep Shimmick Nears Completion of Mosquito Bridge, Creating a Vital New Connection for El Dorado County
After more than four years of construction, Shimmick is nearing completion of the new Mosquito Bridge, a transformative infrastructure project that will soon provide a safer, more reliable connection between the communities of Placerville and Swansboro in El Dorado County. Traffic is expected to transition onto the new bridge later this month, marking the culmination of years of planning, engineering, and construction.
For local residents, the bridge represents far more than a new transportation route.
For decades, residents of the Swansboro community and leaders in El Dorado County have envisioned a safer, more reliable connection across the American River Canyon. The existing one-lane suspension bridge, which is more than a century old, has long served the area but offers limited access for larger vehicles and emergency responders. The new bridge was designed to strengthen connectivity, improve access for fire and emergency services, and provide an important evacuation route for the surrounding communities.
The purpose of this project was really to connect that community," said Charles Marrow, Project Manager. "There's really no way to get an ambulance over there quickly. Fire engines and emergency responders face the same challenge. This bridge provides a safer, more reliable connection."
Standing approximately 400 feet above the American River, the bridge is a remarkable feat of engineering and construction. Crews advanced the structure section by section from both sides of the canyon, eventually connecting the spans in the middle and reaching a milestone that many team members had spent years working toward.
The project’s remote location brought its own challenges. Shimmick developed custom access systems to reach the construction areas and established a dedicated concrete batch plant on site to produce the specialized concrete required for the bridge. Throughout construction, crews navigated rugged terrain while delivering a project that will serve the community for generations.
Today, the bridge is in its final stages of completion. Crews are installing bridge joint seals, completing architectural finishes, and performing final restoration work throughout the project area. Recent milestones include completion of the final concrete barrier placements and the bridge deck’s polymer concrete overlay.
As the project approaches its ribbon-cutting ceremony later this month, excitement continues to build throughout the community and across the County of El Dorado. Residents have watched the bridge rise above the canyon over the last several years and many are eager to see it open to traffic for the first time. Community groups, local agencies, and emergency responders have already expressed strong support for the project and the benefits it will provide.
When traffic begins crossing the bridge later this month, it will represent more than the completion of a major infrastructure project. It will mark a new chapter for the communities it connects, improving access, enhancing public safety, and providing a lasting investment in the future of El Dorado County.
