Shimmick’s transit group, part of our O&M Division, holds one of Shimmick’s longest standing contracts. Since 2002, the group has been performing complex work for Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), aiding in the rail procurement and overhaul of the county’s Metrorail vehicle fleet. The team is acting as program manager of the project, working with the client, manufacturer, subcontractors, and vendors to procure a fleet of 136 cars total, coordinating train manufacturing and design, vehicle testing and inspections, shipping, workforce designation, scheduling, and use of required tools and equipment.
Maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Miami-Dade and Shimmick has been and will continue to be incredibly important. Once all new cars are in use starting July of this year, the manufacturer and Shimmick continue a five-year warranty period. For now, the team is focused on completing the fleet overhaul and finishing out this decades-long contract.
Says Project Manager Dirk Guijt, “Our team is made up of industry experts. We’ve been working with each other for a long time, which makes us a very cohesive and dedicated group. It’s a privilege to be part of a group like that.”
