In a joint venture partnership with URS Washington Division and Obayashi Corporation in 2004, Shimmick Construction entered a Design-Build contract with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to extend its Metro Gold Line six miles eastward, connecting downtown Los Angeles with East Los Angeles, CA. Shimmick personnel accomplished major portions of the design and construction management, earthwork, foundations, shoring, underground stations, bridge work, retaining walls, tunnel portals, wet utilities, and track work.

Four miles of at-grade construction were built within the medians of existing city streets. Each of the six at-grade stations was designed with input from local artisans, making them unique to the surrounding communities. The project included extensive wet and dry utility relocations and - despite heavy traffic conditions - widening and reconstructing the streets within the City and County of Los Angeles. Bridges were built over SR-101, the Los Angeles River, and I-710 under encroachment permits with Caltrain and the City of Los Angeles.

Two of the six miles of track and two of the passenger stations were underground. The Shimmick team was able to construct these using a shoring system that allowed surface traffic to flow during construction.

Our joint venture Design-Build team met all the challenges presented by this vast undertaking by coordinating designs with multiple third-party agencies, systems certifications, testing and startup plans. We implemented a ‘fast-track’ scheduling process, allowing construction to begin on demolition, utilities and rough grading before the final design was even completed. The East Side Extension of the Gold Line opened for service on November 15, 2009.
